6 Wild Calgary Stampede Foods (and the Wines We'd Pair With Them)

Every July, Calgary becomes a completely different city.

The streets fill with cowboy hats and boots, patios are packed, live music spills out of every corner, and the scent of mini donuts, barbecue smoke, and deep fryers seems to follow you wherever you go. Walk through the Stampede grounds and you'll pass families heading to the midway, friends debating which food stand to try next, and someone wearing an outfit that could only possibly make sense during these 10 days.

Now, I know Stampede isn't for everyone. Every year there are plenty of Calgarians who happily leave town and let the tourists and the rowdy crowds take over for ten days. Fair enough.

But for me, Stampede has always been one of my favourite times of year.

I love the community driven pancake breakfasts. I love the live music. I love the rodeo. I love the fashion, from the full fringe outfits to the men in cut off overalls and straw hats to the simple addition of cowboy boots. I love that you can end up in a conversation with a complete stranger and somehow leave feeling like you've known them for years. I love that the whole city seems to come alive.

And of course, I love the food and beverages. Every year there are new creations that range from "that actually sounds delicious" to "who approved this?" and both categories are part of the fun.

As someone who is newer to the wine industry I have started to wonder why wine isn’t a bigger part of the stampede picture. Of course there is the stampede wine competition, and you can always find a great glass at the Lazy S or Ranahans, but wine is really a way to bring people together and encourage conversation and I think we need to highlight that more. So this year, I started thinking about how wine could join the adventure. Because wine doesn’t need to be pretentious or serious, but a great bottle has a way of making great moments even more memorable.

Here are six fun Stampede foods I'd happily line up for—and the wines I'd bringing along for the ride.

Classic Stampede Breakfast + Château de Targé Saumur Extra Brut Rosé

Stampede breakfast with a wine bottle

One of my favourite Stampede traditions isn't found on the midway at all. It's the pancake breakfasts. For ten days, communities all across Calgary gather around folding tables and giant

griddles, catching up with neighbours and friends over stacks of pancakes, bacon, and sausage. Even people who normally wouldn't dream of being awake that early (me) somehow find themselves happily standing in line before work. I personally think it’s just as fulfilling to bring the fun home and host your own Stampede breakfast with family and friends.

To make these festive breakfasts even more of a celebration bring along one of my current fixations, the Château de Targé Saumur Extra Brut Rosé. Its lively bubbles instantly make the gathering feel a little more fun, while notes of crisp apple, fresh pear, and pastry that complement the pancakes and sweet maple syrup beautifully. The freshness of the wine cuts through the richness of the bacon and sausage and keeps everything feeling bright. Even when you've gone back for that second helping of pancakes you definitely didn't plan on having. Much like a great Stampede breakfast, this is a wine that brings people together and turns a simple meal into a celebration.

Fried Frozen Watermelon + Podere 414 Flower Power Rosé

Fried Frozen Watermelon + Podere 414 Flower Power Rosé

As a born and raised Calgarian, there is nothing more nostalgic than walking the midway and smelling the waft of fresh mini doughnuts in the air. Stampede and mini donuts are practically inseparable, so seeing frozen watermelon coated in mini-donut batter feels less like a strange invention and more like fresh take on a classic. Crispy on the outside, cold and juicy on the inside, and topped with strawberry coulis, this is exactly the kind of playful food that makes people stop, point at the menu, and say, "I think we need to try that."

As amazing as mini doughnuts are, and they are truly amazing, the Podere 414 Flower Power Rosé brings the same carefree energy to the pairing with the freshness you need to finish the treat. Its bright acidity is fantastic alongside fried foods, keeping each bite feeling fresh rather than heavy. The wine’s vibrant fruit character plays beautifully with the watermelon and strawberry flavours. This is the kind of wine that feels like a sunny afternoon on the midway, live music drifting through the air, a bag of fried goodness nearby, and absolutely no concern for what time it is.

Crunchy Samosa Chaat + Parajes del Valle Maceración Macabeo Ecológico

Crunchy Samosa Chaat + Parajes del Valle Maceración Macabeo Ecológico

One of my favourite things about Stampede food today is how much it reflects Calgary itself. Sure, you'll still find giant turkey legs (stay tuned for this one) and mini donuts, but you'll also find incredible flavours inspired by the many cultures that make this city what it is. The Crunchy Samosa Chaat is a perfect example. Crispy potato-and-pea samosas are topped with zesty chutneys, cooling yogurt, juicy pomegranate, and crunchy sev, creating a dish that's somehow comforting, refreshing, and packed with flavour all at once.

For a flavour packed dish that highlights the character of our city we need something equally as interesting. The Parajes del Valle Maceración Macabeo Ecológico is exactly the kind of wine I want alongside a dish like this. Its unique personality keeps pace with all the different flavours and textures on the plate, while its bright acidity helps cut through the crispy fried casing. Every bite seems to reveal something new, making this one of those pairings that keeps you coming back for "just one more taste".

Flamin' Hot Turkey Drumstick + Andreas Bender Kulina Gewürztraminer

Flamin' Hot Turkey Drumstick + Andreas Bender Kulina Gewürztraminer

I told you to stay tuned for this one, but this year we aren’t looking at the regular old turkey leg. This take on the classic practically screams Stampede. When I spotted a giant turkey drumstick coated in Flamin' Hot Cheetos I wasn’t sure if this fit into the "who approved this?” or the “that actually sounds delicious” category. The comically giant leg is covered in hot sauce and finished with a crunchy, fiery coating. This is not a food for people looking to keep things subtle. It's bold, messy, and almost guaranteed to end up in at least one photo before you take a bite.

For a food as bold as the aforementioned cut off overalls, you need something to lasso all that heat, in comes the Andreas Bender Kulina Gewürztraminer. Its fruit-forward and off-dry characteristics help cool things down while still standing up to all that heat and crunch. Drinking it feels a bit like walking through those cooling misters on the grounds after spending a little too much time in the July sun. And if you're ordering this one, my advice is to get the blue cheese dip. The creamy, tangy richness of the blue cheese works beautifully with both the spicy coating and this modern take on a Gewürztraminer. You’ll be left in awe at how this creates one of those combinations that somehow makes perfect sense after the first bite. It's a little over-the-top, a little chaotic, and a lot amazing, but that’s exactly what Stampede is all about.

Deep Fried Birria Taco Bomb + Gallina de Piel Mimetic Grenache

Deep Fried Birria Taco Bomb + Gallina de Piel Mimetic Grenache

Some Stampede foods are outrageous. Others are just downright genius. The Deep Fried Birria Taco Bombs are definitely a stroke of genius. These delicious clusters start with slow-cooked birria beef and shredded cheese rolled into a corn tortilla, then deep fried until golden brown. It's topped with onion, cilantro, and salsa, and served with a rich consommé for dipping. Leave the expensive leather fringe at home for this one because it's the kind of food that requires both hands, several napkins, and absolutely no concern for maintaining your outfit.

The Gallina de Piel Mimetic Grenache is generous, approachable, and incredibly easy to enjoy, making it a perfect companion for a dish that's all about comfort and flavour. The wine's bright fruit and freshness keep everything balanced while letting the rich beef and savoury consommé

shine. Between the crispy tortilla, savoury beef, melted cheese, and flavour-packed consommé, there's a lot happening here and the Grenache somehow manages to bring it all together. If you happen to leave the grounds with a tiny drip of birria goodness on your boots, consider it a souvenir; a reminder of the year you discovered just how good this taco bomb was with a glass of Grenache.

Rib Wrangler Smoked Beef Ribs + Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz

Rib Wrangler Smoked Beef Ribs + Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz

Grab a bib and some friends for this one. The Rib Wrangler Smoked Beef Ribs are about as bold as the Stampede itself. A full pound of smoked Alberta beef back ribs is finished with a rich root beer barbecue sauce and topped with a dill-pickle ranch drizzle, creating a meal that is unapologetically big, bold, and gloriously messy.

To wrangle all that smoky, saucy barbecue goodness, you need a wine that can hold its own, and that's exactly where the Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz comes in. Rich, full of personality, and built for hearty fare, it's the kind of wine that feels right at home with smoky barbecue and Alberta beef. The wine's savoury, herbaceous qualities also tie in beautifully with the dill-pickle ranch, bringing another layer to the pairing. This is the kind of combination I imagine grabbing after the rodeo, finding a picnic table on the grounds, and soaking up a little more Stampede atmosphere before heading off to a concert or meeting friends at one of the tents.

Final Thoughts

Maybe that's what I love most about Stampede. For ten days, Calgary gives itself permission to be a little more social, a little more adventurous, and a lot more fun, just like these pairings.

You make new friends. You lean into a little more creativity with your fashion choices. You try foods you wouldn't normally order. And somewhere along the way, those little moments become the stories you tell long after Stampede is over.

A great bottle of wine becomes part of those stories too. It's there for the backyard gatherings, the post-rodeo dinners, the community breakfasts, and the moments when everyone around the table starts saying, "Okay, but you have to try this."

So this year, embrace the wild food. Go see the concert. Cheer at the rodeo. Pull on the cowboy boots. Try the thing on the menu that makes you raise an eyebrow. It might make a memory that last far beyond the last bite and sip. And if nothing else, you'll leave with a few great stories, which when it comes to Stampede, is kind of the whole point.
